Turn your kitchen into a sustainable kitchen in 5 steps
By Gabriela Machado
As you know, at Momoc we're always looking for new ways to be eco-friendly and incorporate sustainable practices into our daily lives . That's why this time we thought: what if we focused on the kitchen? Re-evaluating our habits is not only good for the planet, but it also forces us to redecorate and reorganize a space we rarely touch. Plus, just changing a few things can add a lot of light, and it's fun to do so. Are you up for it?
Use reusable containers and packaging for your food
One of the easiest ways to start having a more sustainable kitchen is by changing the way we store food. Instead of using disposable plastic bags, why not use a silicone one? They come in different sizes and are perfect for freezing leftovers or putting in your backpack for school. Another option is to use reusable food wraps instead of plastic wrap or aluminum foil, which are thrown away once used. They're usually made from reusable materials like beeswax or organic cotton. Simply wash them once you've used them and you can reuse them as many times as you like. Our last suggestion is to use glass jars. They're the perfect way to store dry foods like cereal, pasta, and rice, and they'll give your kitchen a super-organized look without any special work.
Create your own herb garden
Don't have enough space at home to start a garden? Don't worry! You can always plant a herb garden. It's easy to find indoor pots specifically made to fit on any shelf or countertop. Basil, mint, and rosemary are among the herbs that will take the least amount of work. Having your own herb garden is a super-easy way to involve your family in cooking and add a touch of greenery to your home. Plus, who doesn't love having fresh ingredients at their fingertips?
Show off your homemade bread
If you've been like us and dedicated yourself to baking bread during lockdown, what better way to store your creations than with a reusable linen bread bag? Instead of using a plastic bag, which will also make your bread stale, opt for linen. It will allow your bread to breathe and prevent it from drying out, making it last longer and stay fresher. You can make any recipe you want knowing you have a sustainable way to store it afterward. Plus, these eco-friendly bags will make it look like you just came back from the cutest bakery in the neighborhood.
Buy local and organic products
Going to the market is not only fun for the whole family, but it's also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. There are many advantages to shopping locally: fruits and vegetables are in season, the produce is fresh, and you get to know the people behind it. Be sure to always carry your cotton bags with you. Buying locally is not only good for the planet, but also for your community and your health.
Did you know? Buying local products saves you up to 5-17 times more CO2 than shopping at a regular supermarket.
Use eco-friendly brushes to scrub your dishes
Washing dishes with brushes made from bamboo or other recycled materials is a great way to be eco-friendly in your kitchen. Instead of reaching for a sponge every week, buy a durable dish brush. They last a long time and are very easy to clean. Some even offer compostable replacements, perfect for cleaning and caring for the planet at the same time without too much effort.
Did you know? Conventional sponges release tiny plastic particles that end up in the ocean every time we use them. Microplastics not only pollute the oceans but are often swallowed by animals like birds, fish, and other marine creatures.

I love my new sandals from Momoc. I'm surprised how comfortable they are. I'll recommend Momoc shoes to my friends and definitely will take an other pair.
