World Environment Day, today and every day

Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente, hoy y todos los días

Did you know that every three seconds, the world loses an area of forest equivalent to a football field? " Ecosystem loss is depriving the world of carbon sinks like forests and peatlands at a time when humanity can no longer afford it. Global greenhouse gas emissions have increased for three consecutive years, and the planet is on the verge of potentially catastrophic climate change " ( un.org ).

As every year, today is World Environment Day. This year's theme? "Reimagine, Recreate, Restore" - "Restoring ecosystems means preventing, halting, and reversing this damage, moving from exploiting nature to healing it ."

We live in a world where consumerism is almost impossible to avoid, but what we can do is control the types of brands we choose to invest our money in. Fortunately, it's becoming increasingly easier to find brands that are committed to the environment, and at Momoc, we're very proud to say we're one of them. Today, we want to tell you why.

Carbon-free shoes

Exactly a year ago, we launched an Instagram campaign offering the chance to own a square meter of the Genesis Forest in the Picos de Europa (Palencia) with the purchase of a pair of Momoc shoes. The campaign was intended to end on June 5th, but once the date arrived, the project seemed too important to give up. So we decided to take it further and make this campaign a long-term collaboration with Reforestum .

To this day, our customers continue to plant trees with the purchase of our shoes, capturing 60 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere (or, in other words, offsetting 500 km or 730 plastic bottles). In other words, neutralizing their own carbon footprint.

Vegan materials

When we began this adventure, we were a solely sustainable brand. Our main goal was to reduce our carbon footprint, and our efforts were primarily focused on caring for the planet. However, as we grew and the brand took on a life of its own, we realized that our concern for the environment wasn't enough. If we wanted to be respectful, it had to be both for the environment and for the animals that live in it. Starting to work with exclusively vegan materials was the next logical step we felt we had to take, and it remains so.

Recycled materials

A major problem facing the fashion industry is the constant use of new natural resources and the resulting unnecessary disposal of materials that end up polluting the environment and its ecosystems. Just as this year's theme is "reimagine, recreate, restore," the same must be done in fashion. Why use plastic when we can create threads from recycled plastic bottles that end up becoming these sandals ?

Waste-free orders

In August of this year, we decided to switch from a traditional purchasing model to a pre-order model, and we haven't looked back since. "It's a much more ethical and sustainable approach because there's no overproduction, which reduces the risk of having to throw excess stock into a landfill," he says. Emma Slade Edmondson , the founder of ESE Consultancy . It is the antidote against Fast fashion culture . We produce according to demand, thus avoiding overproduction. We can make more accurate estimates of what people like and dislike, and offer discounts we wouldn't otherwise be able to offer. A win-win for everyone.

Tangible results

Currently, for every pair of shoes we produce, Momoc saves:

- 12,000 grams of CO₂ emissions
- 8,000 liters of water
- 0.02 kWh of electricity

Not only that, but we are Committed to Km 0 : most of our suppliers, the manufacturer and the warehouse are located in the same area, in Elda.
