Tomorrow, all those concerned with sustainable living will celebrate a very special day. It's March 22nd: World Water Day , declared by the United Nations to raise awareness of access to drinking water as a fundamental and universal human right.
This year's motto for 2019 is "Leave no one behind." And it makes direct reference to the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development : Progress towards sustainable development must benefit everyone.
Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) is to ensure safe drinking water and sanitation for all by 2030: “Leave no one behind.”
To meet this goal, we need to make this fundamental right available to millions of marginalized and excluded people. And of course, it is essential that, in developed countries, we now become aware of what it means to have safe drinking water and sanitation in our lives. What does this mean? If we continue to waste drinking water, we will not only greatly complicate the mission of universal access to it, but we will also put the survival of this basic resource at risk. Droughts are unforgiving, and waste comes at a high price. Let us take care of drinking water, thinking of ourselves, our daughters and sons, and all those who still lack access to it.
By the way, do you know the social enterprise AUARA ? Is a very special company that develops projects to bring clean water to the world's neediest communities. investigates your project : 100% of the dividends are allocated to a social purpose.
In this article, we want to highlight three simple considerations and nine everyday actions that will help you save drinking water. Shall we begin? Take note!
Considerations
- A healthy and balanced diet is not only sustainable for you but also for the planet. And it helps us save water! Increasing our vegetable consumption and reducing our meat consumption prolongs our lifespan and that of the environment. To learn more, here's this article: Each Spaniard wastes the equivalent of 131 liters of water per day on food.
- Choosing sustainable fashion also helps save water. fast fashion It requires massive cotton plantations, which, in turn, require millions of liters of water per year. For example, an average cotton T-shirt costs approximately 2,000 liters of water. And a pair of jeans costs almost 11,000 liters.
- Let's not forget that poor waste management has a direct impact on water! Reducing plastics to a minimum and recycling as much as possible helps us protect the water in rivers, seas, oceans, and groundwater. Here's a fact to give you an idea: a single cell phone battery that isn't recycled properly can contaminate 600,000 liters of water. How do you feel?
Daily gestures
- Let's turn off the taps whenever we're not using water. For example, when we soap ourselves, wash dishes, brush our teeth, etc.
- Let's heat just enough water to use for cooking or making infusions. It doesn't make sense to heat more water and then throw it away; this oversight wastes water and electricity.
- Let's defrost food at room temperature, not under hot running water. This saves energy and at least 22 liters of drinking water.
- Let's order tap water whenever possible. Making a 1-liter water bottle uses at least 4 liters. It's not worth it, is it? Another practical tip is to carry a reusable bottle in your bag and refill it whenever you need to.
- Let's not use the toilet as a trash can. Flushing the toilet to dispose of tissues used to remove makeup residue, for example, is a waste of water that we can avoid with a very simple, cost-free gesture.
- Let's fully load our dishwashers and washing machines. This saves us at least 3,700 liters each month. Along these lines, energy-efficient appliances are a very attractive long-term solution.
- Let's wash fruits and vegetables in a container instead of placing them under the tap.
- Water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to minimize water evaporation. Our plants will also appreciate this gesture, which also minimizes temperature changes.
- Let's place barrels in the garden to harvest rainwater. This way, we can water for days or wash the car without having to use drinking water.
Finally, to conclude this article, we'd like to explain the measures we're taking at Momoc regarding water consumption. However, if you're following us, you're probably already aware:
- We use chromium- and metal-free leather, so the water used during tanning is not contaminated and is reusable.
- We buy organic cotton to make our shoe bags; water consumption in their production is not contaminated and is very low.
- We print using printing, without using water in this process.
- We dye the leather using an artisanal technique that does not require the use of a drum (a type of dye washing machine that uses a lot of water).
Together, we're moving toward a more sustainable world. We hope this article has served as a reference and inspiration for you to come up with new and better ideas. Let us know!
