Neutralize your carbon footprint with Momoc

Neutraliza tu huella de carbono con los Momoc

Although the official dates seem to vary (some say it's today, others say it's March 21), today is World Tree Day , a day to remember the importance of trees in our lives and in environmental conservation. Trees and forests purify the air and help regulate the climate, among other things. They provide us with basic needs that we are slowly and collectively destroying. Trees, and consequently our environment, are being threatened, and we cannot stand idly by.

At Momoc, we're constantly thinking about how we can protect the environment and fight climate change, whether by changing the fashion industry from within or collaborating on projects that share this same mission. The most important thing for us is to look ahead and find practical solutions to the problems we face as a society. That's why, when we discovered the work Reforestum is doing, we knew we had to contribute in some way. Reforestum seeks to fight climate change through reforestation. Music to our ears. Before continuing, we encourage you to take a look at this short video :

Getting to know Reforestum

Reforestum helps you neutralize your environmental impact by planting trees that offset your carbon footprint. First, they help you calculate it by adding your daily activities to their app. Then you plant the trees you need to capture your CO2 from the atmosphere from the comfort of your home . If you'd like, you can even share and track the growth of your forests with the community (or even visit your forests in the real world!). Reforestum's goal isn't to prevent us from having a carbon footprint, but rather to take responsibility for it.

It's well known that the more time passes, the more we forget the most basic things we learned in school. And although many of you will remember, we thought a little refresher wouldn't hurt. So: why is it said that trees contribute to reducing our carbon footprint? The answer is very simple: thanks to photosynthesis . This natural chemical reaction causes trees to absorb large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere, store it in their branches, trunk, leaves, and roots, and later release oxygen, which in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Every day, people and companies generate greenhouse gases with our activities that They accumulate in the atmosphere and that contribute to global warming of the planet. Living in the world we live in, it would be almost impossible not to generate any greenhouse gas emissions. What we have to understand is that it is not about avoiding it at all costs, but about what we do to counteract the effect it has. And planting trees seems to us to be one of the best ways.

And what role does Momoc play in all this?

It all started a month ago, when we launched an Instagram campaign to celebrate World Environment Day. The campaign offered the chance to own a square meter of the Genesis Forest in the Picos de Europa (Palencia) with the purchase of a pair of Momoc shoes. The idea was for the campaign to end on June 5th, but once the date arrived, we were too sad to say goodbye to this project. So we decided to take it further and make this campaign a long-term collaboration with Reforestum , to give our shoes a deeper meaning.

Starting today, with every pair of shoes you buy, you'll be capturing 60 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere (or, in other words, offsetting 500 km or 730 plastic bottles) thanks to the trees planted in the Genesis Forest. Starting today, every pair of shoes you buy will help neutralize your carbon footprint.

Let's talk about Genesis

Reforestation involves many things: rebuilding ecosystems, providing shelter for endangered species, softening the climate, attracting rain, restoring soil fertility, and even creating jobs. That's why it's important to consider all factors.

At Reforestum We not only take into account the importance of indigenous species for it to exist biodiversity in the forest , but we also study the environmental impact of biotic factors (flora and fauna) and abiotic (temperature, light, humidity). (…) In our first forest, Genesis, different indigenous species have been used (mixed masses) to ensure the presence of a generous number of animal species .”

Genesis is the first forest created by Reforestum. It was born in 2017 thanks to the contribution of 865 reforesters who donated to a campaign launched on Kickstarter in February 2017. It is located in the Picos de Europa , one of those unique and rare places in Europe that combine a dreamlike landscape with a thriving rural economy and a wide variety of flora and fauna. The 671 km2 of the Picos de Europa National Park cover all three massifs. In the highest part of the park, you can see vast meadows full of grazing animals with a wild landscape of lakes and imposing mountain limestone in the background; below, the rocks plunge into a series of gorges.

This park is home to species such as the Cantabrian brown bear and wolves (among others), animals that are very rare to find. To learn more about this park and the species that live there, we encourage you to visit their website .

Reforestum's mission is to connect and empower citizens and organizations with the common goal of reverse climate change protecting and restoring the earth's forest ecosystems for a safer, healthier, and fairer future for ourselves and future generations. We've already joined forces to make this dream a reality, and we want to make it easier than ever for you to join. Now the question is: will you do it?
